[Compcomm] The Next Step

I'm wondering that now at least some of the mechanical details of
getting the forums sorted out is underway, whether it is time to think
of getting a list of "user" preferences for features in the new plug-in
sets? I know that there might have to be some give and take on what can
be delivered. It may not be on anyone's radar yet either to think about
this but thought I would just re-raise this.

As a Beryl user, I like the transparent cube feature. I guess that
people will have their must have features - which may or may not be
achievable to be bundled in, depending on the time-frame before the
first "community" release.

The other thing that might be useful would be to have a release of the
compiz-core and "community" plug-ins that is compatible with a
side-by-side install of a stable Beryl release (or vice-versa). I've
currently got a Compiz 0.5.0 installed and a Beryl 0.2.0 installed and
Compiz has problems because of a decoration plug-in problem (version
issue) when trying to run Emerald. Ideally, particularly for migrating
users over, the users will probably want to be able to run back to their
Beryl configuration. I know I would - particularly during testing, since
I know my Beryl set up is stable and it is my working laptop. :)

Again, this is just a thought and perhaps a wish, rather than a "set in
stone" thing. It also depends on whether the first release has all the
features or only some of the features. Ultimately, this Beryl migration
bundle would have to be deprecated (maybe relatively quickly if features
can be migrated rapidly) but it might provide a path for users to wet
their feet before switching over completely? But it depends on the work
involved, right in achieving this? And whether it is worth it.

I'm happy to help with testing but I'm not sure of the worth of it
because I have such a strange set up - I'm running Slackware-current on
SlackX (X11R72) and Dropline Gnome (2.18 alpha). The machine is a Core 2
Duo laptop with an NVidia 7900 GS 256 Mb video card. I also have a more
modest laptop - Core Duo with an NVidia 7800 128Mb video card (Slackware
11.0 with Dropline Gnome 2.16). I can probably also build Slackware
packages although I note that there might not be that many Slackware
users yet. :)

Cheers,

JonB
