Out of curiousity, which software are you talking about here? 
Sam talked about API changes, feature changes and such that make
information collected in forums become irrelevant over time. That
definitely applies to both older versions of Compiz and Beryl as well as
related plugins.
I'm really not sure what crashes you are referring to at the moment, any
backtraces you may have of compcomm plugins are obviously appreciated.
